Man who admitted strangling wife during UK COVID-19 lockdown cleared of murder

It sounds like an Onion article… except it’s true:

During the trial, jurors heard recordings of Williams insisting to cops that his wife’s death “wasn’t murder,” claiming he “didn’t mean” to kill her.

Is the U.K. legal system in shambles? According to this case… a person can now say they “just snapped and it wasn’t me” to receive a charge of “manslaughter by diminished responsibility” and only a few years in prison. Isn’t this regressive?
